This portrait of astronaut André Kuipers was made for the tv show 'Sterren op het doek'. It's a very popular tv show. There's a competition element too in that the sitter (a Dutch celeb) is painted by three painters and he or she chooses at the end which of the three portraits will be taken home. Problem for the painter is three-fold: they're televised while working which is stressful, they are meant to hold a meaningful conversation with the sitter AND there's the competition element.
